Terminology
PTO: Public telephony operator. In US this is AT&T or Sprint or one of the Bell companies. In UK this is British Telecom.
In Germany this is Deutsche telecom.
POTS line: Analog telephone line provided by PTO for residential or commercial use.
ISDN-BRI line: Digital telephone line provided by PTO for residential or commercial use.
ISDN-PRI line: Digital trunk line which may be provided as T1(22 digital ISDN-BRI lines) or E1(30 digital ISDN-BRI lines).
These trunk lines are provided by PTO.
IP: Internet protocol
ISP: Internet service provider.
Dial up Internet: Where the user dials a number in order to connect to Internet.
DSL: Digital subscriber line. Used for fast Internet access. Allows larger bandwidth access to the user.
ADSL: Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line. Used for Internet access. The upload speed is normally limited to 256k while
download speed can be up to 2M.
VoIP: Voice over IP. The standard voice data is compressed and transmitted over IP bandwidth.
FXS: this is analog interface gateway which connects directly to a handset
FXO: this is analog interface gateway which connects directly to the PTO Pots line
CLI: Caller line ID. This is the users telephone number which normally appears as <city code + telephone number>.
Hunt-Group: a Hunt-Group is a number of POTS lines which carry the same telephone number. PTO normally provides hunt-Groups,
and all calls to the telephone number are mapped consecutively to the next available and free POTS line.
GSM Premicell units: these are units, which carry GSM SIM cards and can be used for inbound call detection and CLI recognition.
